Despite the overcast skies and light sprinkling of rain, hundreds of people made it out to AOPA’s annual Wings and Wheels this Saturday, May 5 2018. Rows of classic cars and rare airplanes lined the airfield, each more spectacular than the last.
At Frederick Flight Center’s booth, CFI Adam took eager passengers on discounted Discovery Flights while mechanic, Ynez, and receptionists, Danielle and Sophia, showed off the school’s Cessna 172. Attendees had the opportunity to enter a raffle for a FREE Discovery Flight, offered at a later date.

In the next booth over, CFI Nathan from Advanced Helicopter Concepts offered introductory flights in an R-44 helicopter. Advanced Helicopter Concepts has a great reputation for training helicopter pilots in the greater Maryland area, and the amount of interest in helicopter training is growing. Advanced Helicopter Concepts recently merged with Frederick Flight Center, a move that promises to bring a wealth of aviation education to the greater Frederick area.
Attendees also had the chance to glance inside the warbird TB-30 Epilson or check out the World War II era Howard DGA-15, owned by Mark Baker, the CEO of AOPA. On the Wheels side, guests could glance inside a fully restored 1930 black Ford or gaze at the cherry red Ferrari Testarossa, both a testament to how automobiles have changed in less than a century.
Certainly, the star of the show was the fully operational B-25 bomber, offering rides around the Frederick area. This B-25 is a World War II era military plane that flew missions in Japan. It was recently restored in 1980 and has been civilian owned ever since. It is currently on display at Delaware Aviation Museum in Georgetown, DE.
Rain started to pour by the event’s ending, but even so, the trip was well worth it to see the fantastic vehicles on display at Wings & Wheels 2018. Thanks to AOPA for putting on the event and all who made it out.
